Short post and plug for a band I just love more and more the more I find out about them. CIVIL WARS.

Genre: Folk/Acoustic.. Really talented people.

I really feel like I have been on a dry music spell for a while. I’ve heard good music, but nothing that I really love just because my musical taste has evolved a lot and I was just really confused what kind of sound I was looking for for a while. However, I can’t stop smiling every time I listen to this duo. They are incredible! Their cd can only be described as perfectly mixed to sound live but with studio quality.

The song I have for you hear to sample is “I’ve Got This Friend.” This is when I first did a double take and really started paying attention. The girl’s (who I later found out to be Joy Williams) voice reminds me of something as smooth and effortless as Priscilla Ahn, but with the ability to completely blow you away on power ballads. The guy (who looks like Johnny Depp v.2) has just as vulnerable and astounding a voice as Joy. And to bring it all together, the quality of their voices are perfectly complimentary.

I can’t say that almost EVERY song is phenomenal as I can about my all-time favorites, but it is extremely fulfilling for the musical stage I am stuck in. And as a cherry on top, their bonus disc contains a well-done cover of one of my favorite pop songs, “I Want You Back”!

BIKES - A Slippery Slope

FEBRUARY 2010

NOW

In case you can’t tell the difference in the Before and After photos, there is now a bike tools corner around one of my nicer chairs in the apartment, many bike tubes laying around, goo gone in the corner, an extra wheel, and oh yeah, a new bike. Literally on an impulse last Tuesday, I thought of why I need a new bike and in less than 24 hours, I got a new bike. If you think it, it will happen.

Humble Wisdom

Background:

So Jesus is invited to eat dinner at a respected Pharisee’s house (a banquet) and this prostitute shows up, kneels at his feet and starts weeping and cleaning his feet with her tears and a bottle of perfume she brought.
The Pharisee who was hosting Jesus, Simon, thought this was ridiculous in his head that such a sinner was all over him like this, but as Jesus heard his thoughts, he reacted by telling this story:

“A man loaned money to two people—five hundred pieces of silver to one and fifty pieces to the other. But neither of them could repay him, so he kindly forgave them both, canceling their debts. Who do you suppose loved him more after that?”
Simon answered, “I suppose the one for whom he canceled the larger debt.”
“Duh,” Jesus said…”I tell you, her sins—and they are many—have been forgiven, so she has shown me much love. But a person who is forgiven little shows only little love.”

Jk, he didn’t say ‘duh’ (that’s just how I feel), but lesson learned—don’t forget to be grateful for what you have been forgiven.

-Luke 7:36-50

Free money?

So after selling tickets in abundance the past couple weeks, I had a lot of cash on hand, and a check from my roommate amounting to half of our rent and more. I decided to deposit most of this into my bank account at Chase Bank on Guadalupe last Friday, 10/1.

Sunday: No new credits in my bank.

Monday: No new credits in my bank.

Tuesday: No new credits in my bank. Shit, I can’t find receipt. WORRIED.

So I called Chase and really upsettedly explained my situation in the best wtf-yet-educated tone I had (wtf because I couldn’t understand the lady on the other end of the line!). I HATE OUTSOURCING!!!!!!!

Sidetrack: Whenever I have a need that is not being met by a representative in India, I use my best black lady intimidation to get the manager on the phone. Just a tip.

Anyways, this one didn’t require my black lady tone though. The lady just asked me how much cash and check was deposited into my account and then kept saying hold on. Hold on. Hold on. Then finally came back after about 2 minutes and was like ‘okay ma’am, your deposit will be credited to your account and should show up within 2 business days.’ This was after she kept telling me she did not see any evidence that there was any deposit into my account.

Ummm.. wtf. Is this all it takes to get free money?

Button #1 - Music

I don’t mean to be a jerk, but it’s almost like a defense when someone tries to tell me about music. This occurred to me last week when my co-worker out of nowhere said “I wish I had a docking station in here so I can play my music. I think you would appreciate the music I play….everyone does.” *DING* Congratulations sir, as many times as you try throughout the day, you’ve finally got my attention. Blood start to simmer in my veins as I slowly turned around in my chair with slightly-squinted suspicious eyes and replied “Well, what do you listen to?”

I saw him squirm slightly in his chair as he hesitated to answer me.. obviously searching for the right bands to say first. This is how I knew I wouldn’t respect his answer even if he did say the right names. He doesn’t even respect his own taste in music.. not enough to not worry about pleasing me, I guess. Anyways, then it just got entertaining as I shot down just about everything he said. He really offended me by presumptuously assuming he knew how my mind worked, when I knew he was wrong from the start.

One additional entertaining note that some of you reading this may appreciate:
During his listing of bands I might like, he did say Stars which is a band I feel iffy about sometimes. I like a couple songs, but not enough to say that I like their entire body of work. Anyways, he followed the word Stars with this comment: “…but nobody listens to them.” *DING* Blood boiled a little more.. in his attempt to display his “indie” taste in music, (1) he named Stars, one of the most popular indie bands around for a while, and (2) eeeveryone I know has at least heard of them. It’s been a long time since I’ve said Stars, and someone followed-up with “who?”

Please don’t be afraid to talk to me about music -I love it- probably in my top 5 conversation topics, but please don’t be a presumptuous ass when doing so.

I will leave you with a photo of my favorite musician to date, which was mistake #3. He didn’t name her, but instead listed Fiona Apple as the only female artist on his ipod. Yelch.

Wow I just realized I titled this post “pop music.” I think I set out to talk about something completely different. I’ll save it for another day.

So I have to say.. screw YouTube. By the time YOU see this entry, it will have been published but right now, as I write it, I am sleeping 1.5 hours after I put my toothbrush in my mouth… and it is still there.

Anyways, so one thing about this video specifically and one thing about a more general category this video fits in.

Video: Normally I do admit covers are pretty good when they are but I don’t like them because most people obviously just want attention and really don’t feel the music, and I feel the need to specifically go out of my way not to give it to people who are looking for it. But these people look so happy!! Just look at that guy on the far right! I’m being pretty serious. I know they’re good, but my favorite thing about this video is how happy they look doing what they love to do.

Category: *ASIAN MUSICIANS* Are you kidding me? Write your own music. So you’ve shown the entire world you can dominate the internet and win over millions of asian fans.. (sidenote: to me, this is the equivalent of black people and those films with only black people in them, iykwim*). Why the hell do I not see an asian artist anywhere near a grammy? I dunno, maybe it’s just me, but covers suck unless you make it a new song. There is nothing artist about singing something that has already been done. Amen?

p.s. Comment ‘Category’ was not dogging on this video. I really like this video cause they look so freakin happy.. and well, duh, the harmonies are just delightful. But also because I saw these guys sing back-up for Mr. Bieber-Fever himself so I feel like they should sing this song however many times they want [Can you find the keyword in this last sentence? :)]

* iykwim = if you know what i mean
